Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII includes
"sex," making it illegal for employers to discriminate against women.

Amendments are still being made to this law. In 2007, on July 30, the House passed, 225-199, the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 2831). The House Education and Labor Committee approved the legislation on June 27, and held a hearing on the subject on June 12. The White House threatened to veto the bill.
