English 9

Get To Know Me Poem

Objectives:

Directions:

From the list that follows, choose 8-10 items to play with in your poem.  You should arrange your “answers” to each item in the manner that most pleases you, that sounds the best to you.  In order to determine the best sound, I suggest you read a variety of orders out loud to yourself.

Connect each line with a transition of some sort that links these ideas in a meaningful way.

                Some good linking words follow:

since                       because                 then                        when                      still                          from

after                        around                   before                     maybe                    yet                          however

if                              so                            and                         but                          until                        therefore

You may need to add a sentence or two to the poem in addition to the lines you create with the 8-10 items.

1.                    I really hate it when I (see, hear, feel) . . .

2.                    I worry about . . .

3.                    What scares me most is . . .

4.                    My favorite (any thing or idea will work here) is because it is. . .

5.                    No one understands about . . .

6.                    If I could change one thing about me it would be . . .

7.                    What I do best is . . .

8.                    _____________ is my favorite place; it is (briefly describe).

9.                    Friends should . . .

10.                 The world needs more . . .

11.                 The world needs less (or fewer) . . .

12.                 If I could paint with only one color it would be the color of ________ because . . .

13.                 I feel most alive when . . .

14.                 To be free is to . . .

15.                 I wish I could be better at . . .

The following is an example of a "Get to Know Me"  poem.  Yours need only include 8-10 of the above items, and remember, what your responses are and the order you choose is up to you. The form is not meant to overly restrict you.  As long as you follow the intent of the directions, it’s okay to break a few of the rules. Be sure to come up with a title.

Painting Me

I feel most alive when I express the true me.

If I could paint with only one color

it would be the color of the sun on all our faces

because it’s hard to hide in that light.

To be free is to be yourself.

My room is my favorite place because the soft colors

in the quilt grandmother made for me,

the high, lace covered windows,

the warm sunlight in winter,

the green plants I started from seed,

and the antiques I have collected

all say this is who I am.

Still, I wish I could be better at listening to people

because I worry about missing something important,

and what scares me most is being ignored.

If the world needs more understanding

then we should all listen and really care so we ignore no one.

And if I could listen better, I could know

the color you would paint with too.
